HAPPY 30th ANNIVERSARY
TAG/The Artists Gallery!

We are celebrating our 30th anniversary as the longest running co-operative gallery in Frederick, MD. Looking back, in the fall of 1990 a group of twelve artists started showing their work at Mahogany Craft, a furniture store on Patrick Street. It turned out to be a mutually agreeable relationship. Here they hung their work, launched 3rd Thursday Gallery Walks and held receptions.

After a year, the group was excited to find their own space and moved to Kemp Hall, owned by The United Church of Christ on Church Street.

In the spring of 2014 TAG/The Artists Gallery moved to a larger space on N Market Street. The opening reception premiered with "The Box Show." This was one of several popular shows, including the "Salon Show" and the "Small Works Show."

As the saying goes, “The only thing that stays the same is change,” and change came to TAG/The Artists Gallery as it did to all of America in 2020. The tight band of artists lost their lease and a pandemic came roaring like a freight train into everyone’s life.

TAG/The Artists Gallery is now transitioning into a temporary, pop-up space at Bravura, 428 N Market Street. This is an opportunity to participate in a brick and mortar space in the dynamic N Market arts community while we stay safe and make a decision about our next move to a “forever home.”

During this time we have been maintaining a strong online presence sharing members' new work each month on our website, Facebook/The Artists’ Gallery, Instagram/tagfrederick, and new member events in our monthly newsletter.

Stay tuned. We are a group of committed, talented artists that work together, show together, and play together. Monthly meetings, opening receptions, Christmas parties, summer picnics and regular dining out following member meetings make this cooperative gallery a family.

JULIE MAYNARD is Waxing Poetic
Lately Julie Maynard has been sifting through the thousands of photographs she has taken over the years. Julie says, "Digital cameras make this kind of hoarding waaaay too easy. But it’s interesting to see the kind of things I keep going back to— like houses set in the middle of fields, all by themselves. What will I do with these images? Collages, maybe. But if someone would give me a nice big empty field, I’d have a lot more fun installing a maze of walls and then running rampant with vines." Working title: "Spider Field."

SARAH HIGGINS in Faber Birren Color Show
Sarah Higgins painting, “Balancing Act”, was accepted into the nationally juried 40th Annual Faber Birren Color Award show. The exhibition in Stamford, Connecticut is open September 26 - November 8.

JAN MCINTYRE-CREAGER at MFA Circle Gallery
Jan McIntrye-Creager will be exhibiting her painting “Curious Confines” in the Fall Member’s Madness show at the MFA Circle Gallery in Annapolis, MD. This will not be an online show. The gallery is open daily from 11:00 - 5:00 and the show runs from October 9 - 23.

SHYAM RELE
The mayor of Morrisville, NC is the proud owner of three of Shyam Rele’s paintings. The mayor stated, “As a proud owner of Shyam Rele’s art it’s going to be a case of neighbor’s envy owner pride and talk of the town.”

Way to go Shyam!

Colleen Clapp and Karen Peacock participate in "The Claire McCardell Project: Inspired By Claire"

To honor the groundbreaking talents of Frederick’s own fashion designer and business woman, The Frederick Art Club has spearheaded a movement to create and install a larger-than-life-size bronze statue of Claire McCardell overlooking Carroll Creek.

Originally planned as a local art exhibit, due to Covid 19 the show has now been made available for viewing virtually. Ten artists from The Frederick Art Club contributed their talents to create artwork inspired by Claire’s gifts of innovative design to the fashion world.

A special nod goes out to former member, Marion Griffin, who organized the show. Most of the artists included in the video are past members of TAG/The Artists Gallery. Two, Colleen Clapp (left/top) and Karen Peacock (right/bottom), are current members.

TOM RITCHIE Wins 1st Place
TAG member Tom Ritchie won 1st place in the Harford Plein Air Festival Quick Draw for his painting, “Market Day.” The event was held in Bel Air on September 19. This painting was created within a two hour time limit for Quick Draw paintings and exhibited on Bel Air’s main street.

RHONDA SMITH Receives Top Award
Rhonda Smith received a top monetary award for “Essential ingredients for a Safe Journey” which was part of the Moments In Time - A Very Weird Time juried exhibition at the Athenaeum Gallery, Old Town Alexandria, Va.
